Earthquakes

Earthquakes do not occur as often in Australia. They don't experience earthquakes as much because they sit in the middle of the Indo-Australian tectonic plate. they are away from the boundaries and other tectonic plates where major and more frequent earthquakes occur. There have been a few that have happened frequently in 2021 Victoria got an earthquake that was 5.8 and 4.3 and western Australia was hit with a 5.3 that same year. the year after, another one had a magnitude of 4.8 in western Australia, and in March they had one in the south. Although they don't experience many earthquakes Adam Pascale is the chief scientist at Seismology Research Centre. He stated although there have been more earthquakes than usual, it is fine because they are happening in normal return time.

Although we don't get earthquake activity as much; the Indo-Pacific region experiences more disasters. However, Australia is working along their side to improve their preparedness and their disaster response system.

  1. Hi Adrian. Its really interesting to see how different each country can be from one another. Whereas your country, Australia doesn't get frequent earthquakes, my country of Costa Rica gets a lot of them. Another difference seems to be with the magnitude of the earthquakes experienced in each country. Although a 5.8 magnitude seems big when thinking about it, some of Costa Rica's major earthquakes have been above a 7+ magnitude and have caused extensive damage. It is good to see that even though Australia doesn't have frequent earthquakes that they still have some information for preparedness as the more the country's residents are informed the better.

  2. Hi Adrian! It is super cool to compare our countries together. While Australia got multiple big shakes in 2021 Morocco was quite up until 2023 where we had a devastating shake that killed about 2,960 people with a 6.8 magnitude. Australia is lucky that they don't get bad earthquakes. Good job on your post!

  3. Interesting that they do not get a lot of earthquakes except for a few every once in a while. I thought it was cool you used the pictures to show how bad their earthquakes get. The Dominican Republic has had some earthquakes in the past 20 years but not too much.

  4. Hey Adrian, I think that it is really interesting that Australia doesn't get many earthquakes despite its location and size. Australians must be doing a lot better than the people of Haiti because Haiti is located right next to a few tectonic plate boundaries and experience earthquakes about every 11 days.
