Coastal Problems

To begin to get you to know what coastal problems are in Australia, it is coastal erosion. What is Coastal Erosion? It is when the ocean takes away things, for example, the waves hit the shore and take away a certain amount of sand or a rock, making the beach smaller or emptier. It is usually driven by waves and currents; however, coastal erosion is often associated with bad weather.

Many beaches in Australia are vulnerable to coastal erosion. There is an event called "La Niña". They call it this because it is the weather pattern that affects Australia. This typically happens in the spring and summer months. They had done a study of four decades with satellite imagery.  Dr Javier Leon is a lecturer in physical geography at the University of the Sunshine Coast. HE has estimated that in the past 3 years, the shoreline has retreated by 20 meters and sand dunes receded between 7cm and 10cm.

Australia is developing and understanding Coastal erosion. They developed methods and tools that can help support the coastal risk assessments, and they also support national initiatives to manage the coastal environment. Overall, they contribute the programs that will help them prevent, if not give notice to the residents.

  1. Hi Adrian,
Thanks for sharing this informative post! Coastal erosion is definitely a serious issue, especially in a country like Australia with so many popular beaches. I didn’t know that La Niña had such a strong impact on shoreline retreat. It’s great to hear that researchers and national programs are working on solutions and tools to monitor the risks.

  2. Hello Adrian,
It is surprising to read that the shoreline of Australia has changed 20 meters in just 3 years. It is good to see that Australia is using tools to help with monitoring coastal erosion.

  3. Hello Adrian,
I enjoyed reading your discussion and learning about the impact tit has had from the event of La Niña. Similar to my country Chile where other weather events have impacted our coastlines where erosion has increased. It is important to be able to do more studies about erosion to be prepared for any sudden movement and destructions. Great post thank you for sharing!

  4. Hi Adrian, It’s good to know that Australia is not only aware of the issue but also actively developing tools and strategies to assess and manage the risks. I wonder what kinds of warning systems or policies are already in place to protect residents and coastal ecosystems. Coastal erosion seems like a slow-moving threat, but it clearly has real consequences for communities and the environment.

  5. Coastal erosion in Australia is a major issue, especially during La Niña weather patterns, which bring stronger waves and storms. It causes beaches to shrink as sand and rocks are pulled away by ocean currents. Studies show some shorelines have retreated up to 20 meters in just three years. To address this, Australia is using satellite data and new tools to assess coastal risks. These efforts aim to protect the coastline and keep communities informed and safe.

  6. Hi Adrian,
It seems like coastal erosion is a big problem in Australia, I would expect it does because it is surrounded by water, i wonder how they have adapted over time to contain or solve these problems

  7. Interesting report! The Dominican Republic also has coastal erosion that affects the country. It can be a big problem for areas. Nice job!
