Extreme Weather Events
Many extreme weather events are going on in Australia. Queensland is in the middle of a severe flood, there is a tropical cyclone going on in the Western part of Australia, and a lot of bush wildfires going on that were caused by storms and the hot and windy weather. However, we will be talking about the heat waves they have experienced.
In 2022 the Western part of Australia has gone through many heat waves. A town called Onslow In January they experienced a temperature of 50.7C and the conversion to Fahrenheit it will be 123 degrees Fahrenheit; another town called Perth had six days of 40 C temperature. The average temperature in Australia is 20-37 C. In 2015-2016 summer Perth had a record of 7 summer days that exceeded 40C. However, in 2021-2022 the city Perth surpassed that. Due to the major heat waves they experience they also experience the Winds and dry weather from the desert. Heatwaves are one of the major natural hazards that they experience in Australia. The reason it is major is because it impacts many things for example the infrastructure, agriculture, ecosystems, and health.

Hello Adrian,
ReplyDeleteA very significant and much disregarded subject is brought to light in your piece. The high temperatures you cited, such as Onslow's 50.7°C (123°F), are more than just statistics; they demonstrate the concerning changes in climate trends. Perth's transition from seven days above 40°C in 2015–2016 to even more in 2021–2022 is particularly remarkable. That kind of rise in such a short period of time demonstrates just how quickly things are evolving. I particularly like how you brought attention to the wider effects of heatwaves, which go beyond mere pain and have serious repercussions for infrastructure, ecosystems, agriculture, and most importantly, public health. The combined stress of simultaneous cyclones, wildfires, and floods makes it clear how closely linked and delicate everything is.
Hello Adrian,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your blog is was very detail-oriented and you went deeply into heat waves and specific and I liked that. I can't believe that the heat gets up to 50 degrees Celsius that's unbelievable! MY country and Turkey and one of my extreme weather events was heatwaves as well, and we some similar information that I could relate to with my own blog.
Hi Adrian,
ReplyDeleteI liked your article also. I chose to look at Australia because one of these days I would like to go there! It is unbelievable how hot it actually got! Good write up !
Hi Adrian,
ReplyDeleteI found it interesting to compare the frequency and temperature in which heatwaves occur in your country to mine. In Bangladesh, they also experience heatwaves, but are primarily seasonal and are steadily increasing in terms of temperature as the years go by. Also, your country experiences far harsher heatwaves when compared to mine, which only peak at around 104 degrees Fahrenheit. It's very interesting to see how two different regions suffer the same environmental challenges but in slightly different ways.
Interesting read!-what would those mitigation measures you'd suggest be?
